Rising homicide cases rock Sheikhupura

As many as 160 murder incidents reported over past eight months

In Sheikhupura, the number of murder cases had started increasing as at least 160 incidents were registered by the local police over the past eight months.

The rising homicide in the city with the added trouble of street crimes had become a major challenge for the police department.

In the past eight months, 149 homicide cases were registered while 11 murder during robbery cases were also reported.

According to the police data, in the cases registered in different police stations across the district, 401 suspects were involved in 149 murder cases out of which 222 accused had been arrested and transferred to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, eight out of 32 accused involved in 11 murder cases during the robbery had been arrested and sent to jail.

According to the police, more than 1,200 cases of robbery and looting of citizens were registered in which a total of 1,893 people were involved out of which 1,089 accused were arrested and millions of rupees in cash and stolen goods were also recovered.

Several families of the victims of robberies and firing by robbers also staged protests but police had so far been unable to control the rising number of robberies.

DPO Ahsan Saifullah told The Express Tribune that special teams had been formed to arrest other accused involved in the cases.

“They will be arrested soon while checkpoints and snap checks are being carried out across the district to curb robberies. Police is taking effective measures to protect citizens.”

On January 30, the quintuple murder between two rival families shocked the city.

The number of lives claimed by 17-year-old feud between two families in Muridke has risen to 25 after the death of six persons in an overnight attack. The Kasab and Butt groups clashed for the first time in 2004.

Three members of the Kasab group were killed by members of the Butt group in Lahore over after an exchange of harsh words over a cable issue.

Three years later, the Kasab group got an opportunity to avenge the casualties, killing eight members of the Butt group.

The enmity continue to intensify over time, although dignitaries of the area and the police repeatedly tried to persuade the rival groups to settle the matter. In 2017, the Kasab group killed five members of the Butt group, including children. Only two members of the Butt family survived the attack. In the latest incident, five people, including Baba Reyasat, the head of the Kasab group, were killed.

Among the victims was a young man named Waqas, whose marriage was scheduled five days later.
