AIG, his brother were travelling on motorway when suspects opened fire on them

Unknown assailants shot dead the Additional Inspector General (AIG) National Highways and Motorways Police's (NH&MP) brother Nouman Afzal, a grade-19 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Services, and injured the AIG Sajjad Afzal Afridi within the limits of Naseerabad police station on Friday.

Police have cordoned off the area to trace the culprits behind this gruesome killing. According to a spokesperson, the AIG and his brother were travelling on the motorway when unknown armed suspects opened fire on them near the Fateh Jang interchange.

As a result, AIG's brother died on the spot while Afridi was seriously injured and shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for treatment.

The suspects fled the scene leaving their vehicle on Fateh Jang Road. After CCTV footage of the attack came to light, police began searching for the suspects, the spokesperson informed. Senior police officials rushed to the crime scene upon receiving the report of the incident and further investigation was underway, he added.

The case will be registered under the provisions of terrorism and the investigation will be handed over to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). Sources at Pims said that the AIG is out of danger.

Meanwhile, the Regional Police Officer has directed the authorities concerned to conduct a proper investigation so that the culprits behind the tragic incident could be traced without any delays.
