RAWALPINDI:

At least two people were injured after a dilapidated building collapsed in the Babu neighbourhood of Rawalpindi Cantonment as a heavy downpour lashed the twin cities on Tuesday.

Two motorcycles and 10 cars also got damaged after the structure fell onto a crowded road. A special rescue team was called for the rescue operation, which sealed the collapsed building to avoid further losses.

Owing to choked drains, the rainwater accumulated on several main roads of the city including Murree Road, Rawal Road, Mall Road etc causing traffic jams.

The Murir Chowk bridge and the Committee Chowk underpass were also inundated with the rainwater.

The choked drains with the twin cities inundated different roads and the gutters spewed as well due to the inflow of rainwater. The rainwater mixed with sewerage water made it difficult for people to cross the roads who had come out to shop groceries during the relaxation in the lockdown.

Two to three feet of water accumulated on roads and in alleys in many areas of the garrison city as drains became choked.

The Met Department recorded 15.5 millimetres of rain in catchment areas of Nullah Leh, 45 millimetres in Bokra, 12 millimetres in Chaklala and three millimetres in Shamsabad.
