ISLAMABAD:

The ruling PTI and its key ally in Balochistan – the BAP – have failed to iron out their differences over appointing a new governor of the province despite Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Tuesday visit to Quetta.

In April, Prime Minister Imran had asked Balochistan Governor Amanullah Khan Yasinzai to step down, stating that he intended to appoint a new governor to the province in view of the transformed political challenges facing the country.

"It has been a pleasure to have worked with you, striving for creation of a welfare state and especially looking after the problems of people of the province of Balochistan," the premier wrote.

"However, given the current political situation, dexterity and deftness is needed at this juncture for a delicate balancing act to simultaneously ensure political inclusion and fulfillment of our commitment towards the people of Pakistan.

"I [therefore] intend to appoint a new governor in Balochistan and would, therefore, request you to resign," the letter stated. More than a month has passed since the premier wrote the letter; however, Yasinzai has not handed in his resignation.

The PTI wants to appoint Zahoor Agha as the new governor. However, the BAP has reservations over the nomination. According to sources, the premier during his Tuesday visit to Quetta and Ziarat also held discussion with Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal and others on appointing a new governor.

According to the sources, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani – who belongs to the BAP – is also campaigning for some candidates.

They said the names of Senator Naseebullah Bazai and Asif Durrani are also under consideration.

The sources said in view of the present situation President Dr Arif Alvi has asked Amanullah Khan Yasinzai, a former high court judge, to keep working until further orders. They said the new governor may be appointed after the new fiscal budget.
