Chairman condemns attempts to intimidate those who work to uphold rule of law

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Vice Chairman Khushdil Khan on Friday strongly condemned the threats against its Journalist Defence Committee.

In a statement, the PBC Chairman said he has been apprised of the threats sent to the legal team representing journalist Asad Ali Toor, condemning the “blatant attempts to intimidate and threaten those who work towards upholding the rule of law.”

“As member of the legal fraternity, I affirm that we will not tolerate these threats and intimidation tactics,” he added.

As per initial and unconfirmed reports, unidentified assailants broke into his house and physically assaulted the journalist.

The chairman also commended the constitution of a legal team by the Journalist Defence Committee to pursue Asad Ali Toor's case.

“We commend the consistent dedication of the Journalist Defence Committee in providing legal aid and assistance to journalists,” the statement read.

The mandate of the Journalist Defence Committee, the chairman said, is to operate within the framework of the law and ensure malafide prosecutions to end the persecution of journalists at the hands of the state
