‘Biases against women deep-rooted in language’

ISLAMABAD:

The International Day of Women is no ordinary day for it is the day which symbolises and creates awareness that women are no less than men and are equal partners who play a pivotal rule in the growth and progress of society.

To commemorate the event, the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Department of International Relations in Islamabad organised a seminar highlighting the tremendous role of women and their continued struggle for nation-building in Pakistan.

Distinguished academics of the university spoke on the august occasion.

Pro Rector Academics NUML Dr Safeer Awan said: “Women’s movement is divided across the ideological spectrum. But the good thing is that all women come together on international women’s day.”

He also said biases against women are more deep-rooted in language and culture. “The gatekeepers of honour and culture exploit women’s bodies for their narrow ideological politics. However, the positive thing is that social consciousness about women’s rights is increasing in the right direction.”

IR HOD Dr Rizwana Abbasi said that to lead successfully in this century and beyond, we need transpersonal leaders who are ethical, authentic and lead without egocentricity by setting aside the personal desire for power.
