Legendary veteran star Neelo passes away

Her son Shaan broke the news after which many, including the PM and fellow peers, offered their condolences to him

Legendary Pakistani veteran star Neelo Begum passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness, son and actor Shaan Shahid announced on social media. "It is with the saddest of heart I share the departure of my mother as she has gone to her creator .may Allah blesses her," the Waar star shared on Twitter.

The actor began her fruitful career in the film industry at the age of 12 from Bhavani Junction. When Neelo appeared in the film Saath Lakh, the song Aaye Mosam Rangeele Sohane became one of her most famous songs. Neelo, while showing the essence of her art in many films during her film journey, rose to fame due to her item songs. 

Born as Cynthia Alexander to a Christian family of Bhera, a town on the outskirts of Sargodha, she went on to make a name for herself in the film world as her stage name Neelo. 

The late star married well-known Pakistani film director Riaz Shahid after converting to Islam, changing her name to Neelo. Her popularity peaked in 1960, where she showed her acting prowess in several memorable films including Miss, Ezra, Zarqa, Banjaran Betty, Dachi, Jidar, Sher Di Bachi and Nagan Nets. 

Many, including PM Iman Khan, took to social media and offered condolences to the Operation 021 star. 

The premiere offered his condolences to the star and penned, "My condolences and prayers go to Shaan Shahid on the passing of his mother."

PTI leader Faisal Javed Khan too took to social media and said, "Saddened to hear about your loss dear, Shaan Shahid. May Allah rest your mother's soul in peace and give you and your family enough strength to cope with this huge loss."

"So sorry for your immeasurable loss. No words," actor and model ZQ wrote, adding, "May Allah Grant your mother the highest place in Jannat and give you and your family the strength and Sabar to bear your loss. Ameen summa Ameen."

"I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Madam Neelo Shahid - mother of our great movie star Shaan. May Allah rest her soul in peace. My heartfelt condolence to Shaan and his family. May you all have the patience and strength to bear this huge loss. Aameen," his co-star Reema Khan shared on Instagram.

Cricketers Muhammad Hafeez and Ather Shahzad too offered their condolences. 

"I don’t know what to write as words have become empty, just like the world without her is so meaningless," the Arth star recently relayed. "My success and my failures both need her. The only hope that is still alive is to meet her one day beyond the boundaries of life. Love you forever. May Allah be with you."
