National Food Security and Research Secretary Ghufran Memon on Thursday stressed the need for promoting aquaculture in coastal areas.

He urged experts to identify loopholes in the promotion of fish and other seafood products.

Speaking at a workshop titled "Promotion of Aquaculture of High-Value Species in Coastal Areas of Pakistan", organised by the Fisheries Development Board, Memon said, "We can do wonders in the next 6-12 months; it is a virgin area and an untapped market."

He said there was a need to identify the problems and issues faced by the fisheries industry in the export of quality seafood products around the world.

The secretary was disappointed to see progress on setting up fish processing units and said such units should be developed and advanced to keep seafood fresh and grab markets.

He invited Sindh and Balochistan to participate in the federal government-funded projects as their participation was limited.
