LAHORE:

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar has said the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) wanted to impose decisions of its choice. The PDM's protest outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is just a matter of their political needs, he added.

Speaking to media persons, after the inaugural ceremony of the Journal of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine at Governor’s House on Tuesday, Sarwar said the era of handling institutions with remote control has passed and now the institutions are independent. “The government is pursuing the policy of purging the institutions of political interference,” he said.

Responding to a question, he said the opposition has been pursuing a policy of protest for a long time and every time they hope to overthrow the government. “But their hopes of overthrowing the government will be dashed many times by 2023. Opposition's plan to pressurise institutions will fail once again.”

He underlined that the opposition wanted to keep the political atmosphere heated for its survival. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan is as strong as a rock. “There is no doubt that the PTI has the confidence of people and is in power due to Prime Minister Imran Khan's struggle.”

He also said there will be no political discrimination in the Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority. Clean drinking water will be provided to the people in all constituencies of Punjab and the pace of work on the projects of Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority will be expedited.

Addressing the inaugural event, the governor said health facilities provided by the medical universities to the people through telemedicine centres during the coronavirus pandemic in Punjab are commendable.

He said the universities should partner with the industry to provide employment to the youth and strengthen the economy.

University of Health Sciences (UHS) Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said at present only 113 scientific journals are being published in Pakistan while 395 scientific journals are being published in the United Kingdom.
