Police in federal capital clamp down on street crime

The Islamabad Police on Tuesday issued its performance report for 2020, claiming to have apprehended nearly 16,000 suspected criminals and clamping down on street crime and drugs.

The report stated that they had arrested 15,799 suspects during the year, including 1,934 absconders.

The report added that some 340 gangs of criminals were busted with 807 gangsters apprehended during this period. Police further claimed to have arrested 430 people involved in 289 dacoity cases and recovered stolen valuables worth millions from their possession.

Further, some 587 burglars were held for their involvement in 431 burglaries.

The report noted that a total of 502 suspects, involved in 485 cases of motorbike or car theft, were held, while 451 stolen or tampered cars and 287 motorbikes were recovered from their possession.

It was further shared that during special crackdowns against absconders, various police teams arrested 706 proclaimed offenders and 1,228 criminals wanted by the court for their involvement in cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, snatching and other crimes of heinous nature.

Police teams also apprehended 1,363 people for possessing illegal weapons and recovered 74 assault rifles, 50 carbines, 1,176 pistols, 12,784 rounds of ammunition and 74 daggers from their possession.

Additionally, 1,756 people were held for possessing narcotics and liquor as 1,641 cases were registered throughout the year while 571.835 kilogrammes of hashish, 171.076 kilogrammes of heroin, 10.515 kilogrammes of opium, 2.293 grammes of ice (crystal methamphetamines), 271 grammes of cocaine and 20,284 bottles of liquor were recovered.

Police teams also held four people who were allegedly involved in supplying drugs on campuses and recovered 2.12 kilogrammes of hashish, 1.14 kilogrammes of heroin and 115 grammes of ice from their possession.

The report noted that the Islamabad Police had cracked down against anti-social elements, arresting 196 people and registered 27 cases against them.

To ensure the protection of the lives and properties of citizens, 53 search operations were conducted along with personnel of other law enforcement agencies. During these raids, 583 suspects were held, the report added.

During the same period, it shared, legal action was taken against 14,622 professional alms-seekers while 23 blind murder cases were resolved and 39 alleged killers were arrested. Similarly, 503 people were nabbed for involvement in aerial firing and 309 gamblers were held during the year.

Moreover, investigators completed probes of 10,441 cases, submitting their challans in the relevant courts.

DIG operations commended that the police officers remained firm against criminal elements and emerged successful following directives of the IGP.

He urged all officials to adopt a friendly attitude as it helps in building trust in the police and resolving people’s problems.
