Ex-MPA among 3 held for illegal property trade

Anti-corruption officials say they are conducting raids to arrest remaining 9 suspects

Anti-graft officials in Rawalpindi have arrested a former opposition lawmaker, his father and uncle, for alleged illegal property transactions.

Officials of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in Rawalpindi arrested Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) former member of parliament Chaudhry Sarfraz Afzal after booking him in a case of buying and selling plots in a housing authority without the approval of the competent authority. Thereby, they are accused of causing a huge loss to the people and the public exchequer.

A team of the ACE-Rawalpindi, led by its Assistant Director Zahid Zahoor, conducted a raid on an Airport Road property and arrested Afzal.

After his arrest, Afzal complained of chest pain and he was subsequently transferred to the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC). After an initial checkup, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Filed on the complaint of ACE Rawalpindi circle officer Zulfiqar Bazeed, Afzal through the alleged collusion of RDA officers, illegally sold plots in the Palm City Housing Society in Mouza Kot Jabi without the approval of the authority and defrauded the public of huge sums of money.

The ACE said that a total of 12 people have been nominated in the case including Afzal, his father Chaudhry Afzal Khan, uncle Malik Ghulam Raza, Rawalpindi Development Authority’s (RDA) deputy planning director Tahir, assistant director Samiullah Niazi, deputy director Muhammad Ijaz, and a building inspector are named in the FIR.

Others named in the FIR include Maqsoodul Hassan, Ghulam Mehboob, Ataur Rehman Qureshi, property developer Raja Zaheer, Sim Pak owner, and former DSP Muhammad Iftikhar.

The ACE officials said that apart from the three arrested late on Wednesday, they are raiding the suspected hideouts of the other suspects.

Afzal is the nephew of former Senator Chaudhry Tanveer and the cousin of prominent PML-N leader Danial Chaudhry.
