The search committee assigned the selection of vice-chancellors (VC) for public universities in Sindh has shortlisted three candidates for the post of VC at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, Lyari (BBSUL), it emerged on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the committee interviewed 11 prospective candidates.

Earlier, the committee had issued interview letters to 12 candidates but among them, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, VC Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat excused himself from appearing for the interview.

The committee interviewed 11 remaining candidates and of them, reportedly, shortlisted the current VC of BBSUL, Dr Akhtar Baloch, acting Higher Education Commission executive director and a member of HEC's operation and planning department Dr Fateh Muhammad Mari and Dr Nabi Bux Jumani, who has served as the dean of International Islamic University.

According to sources affiliated with the search committee, the committee has recommended that Dr Mari be preferred for the post, since its first choice, Dr Baloch, fails to meet the criterion of 10 years of administrative experience.

The shortlisted names will be sent to Sindh chief minister, who is the controlling authority of public varsities in the province, for the final selection.
