HARIPUR:

At least eight people, including five police personnel, were injured in Haripur early on Thursday when they traded fire with the suspects they had gone to arrest.

However, the family of suspects said that they fired in defence when police officers barged into their home late at night and without warrants.

Sources told The Express Tribune that police from the Khalabat Township and Saddar conducted a joint raid on a house in the Sarae Naimat area of Haripur early on Thursday in response to a first information report (FIR) lodged by Amjad Bahadur Shah, Bahadur Ali and others under Section 188 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) (liability of offences committed outside Pakistan or in tribal areas).

However, residents started firing at the police squad.

As a result, Saddar SHO Shafiqur Rehman, Khalabat Township SHO Sajid Nawaz, ASI Amir Khan and lady constable Sanam Naz were injured.

Backup was summoned while the squad started trading fire with the suspects. The police apprehend three suspects, who had also been injured, and recovered arms from them.

However, the family of the arrested suspects claimed that they opened fire in self-defence, mistaking the police officers scaling their boundary wall for robbers. They further asserted that police did not have any arrest warrants nor a copy of the FIR - based on which they conducted the raid- when they arrested the suspects.
