KARACHI:

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast on Thursday another monsoon spell for Karachi starting Saturday, with light to moderate showers occurring in the city between Sunday and Monday.

In this regard, chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz said that a low air pressure system could form in the Indian state of Gujarat on Friday (today), which could later cause monsoon rains in the port city. As a result, Sindh is expected to witness its third spell of monsoon rains from Saturday, after the system enters the province via the Rann of Kutch.

Meanwhile, sea breezes are expected to remain suspended in the metropolis.

Prior to the upcoming monsoon spell, Karachi witnessed heavy downpours on July 6 and July 17, with the deluge driving the city into chaos amid electrocution deaths, prolonged power cuts, flooding, overflowing gutters and roads choked with long queues of vehicles.

According to the PMD, monsoon rains usually last from July to September in Pakistan and this year, Karachi and other cities of Sindh could witness 20 per cent more rainfall than usual.

Ahead of the third monsoon spell, the maximum temperature in Karachi is expected to be 36 degrees Celsius and the minimum 34 degrees Celsius today (Friday). On Thursday, the city's maximum temperature was recorded at 35.7 degrees Celsius.

Besides, the city experienced winds blowing at 35 kilometres per hour on Thursday, with humidity levels rising to 72 per cent in the morning, before dropping to 62 per cent in the evening.
