PESHAWAR:

The provincial chief executive on Thursday directed to launch the Cities Improvement Project (CIP) before the end of the calendar year even as he directed to speed up work on other civic projects.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan issued these directives while presiding over a meeting to take stock of the progress made so far on CIP.

The project is scheduled to be launched in five major cities of the province to improve and strengthen the municipal infrastructure and services offered there.

In May, the provincial government had announced that it will launch a project to improve the access to quality urban services for residents through enhanced municipal infrastructure and to further strengthen the institutional capacities of municipal bodies.

In the first phase, the project will be implemented in Peshawar, Kohat, Abbottabad, Mardan and Swat districts.

The project will receive financial assistance to the tune of $9.5 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), while the provincial government will contribute by providing the requisite land for these projects.

Reviewing the progress made in the project, CM Mahmood expressed his satisfaction. He directed that the relevant authorities complete the detailed engineering designs of all sub-projects identified under CIP so that groundwork on these projects can be initiated.

Earlier, the meeting was told that the topographic and geo-technological survey and preliminary designs of all sub-projects have been completed.

The preparations of engineering designs and the Project Concept-I (PC-I) of these projects will be completed by the end of July.
