Wildlife chief assures world-class Dera Ghazi Khan zoo

Says process of making animal pairs has begun at recreational facility

LAHORE: Punjab Director General Wildlife and Parks Lieutenant (R) Sohail Ashraf said that the Dera Ghazi Khan Zoo will provide world class recreational facilities for locals.

The process of making pairs of animals present at the zoo has begun. All resources will be used to protect wildlife, which is our national heritage, Ashraf further said.

The field staff deployed at Cholistan has been directed to remain attentive and guard the site from illegal hunters.

The DG issued this statement during a visit to the DG Khan zoo after orders from Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzadar. A lioness from Lahore Zoo has immediately been transferred to the Dera Ghazi Zoo to complete the pair at the latter facility.

A male Nile bull and other animals will also be sent soon to the DG Khan Zoo, the director general stated. He also said that special training will be given to animal keepers to ensure the world-class care of animals and birds.

In addition, Lahore Zoo veterinary officer Dr Rizwan has been given the task for medically examining of the animals and birds in DG Khan Zoo. The DG was dismayed over the improper cleanness and poor management at animal enclosures.

He urged the management to ensure full implementation of the SOPs issued with regards to dengue prevention. He also inspected the water points and the supply areas which cause the growth of dengue larvae.

The director general ordered the immediate repairs of the broken fence, along with maintenance of the water supply line. Sohail Ashraf also reviewed the construction project of Tunsa Mini Zoo and directed the officers concerned to speed up the work.

“The allotted funds will be provided immediately to build a feasible and high standard recreational space for the public,” he added.

Later, the DG also made an unannounced visit to Cholistan to check on the presence of field staff. He later went to Dharod, passing through Darawar, Kothi Thal, Chachran and Tokenwala.

He also visited the site of ongoing development work, ordering the officer in charge of the Bahawalpur Zoo to provide the best health treatment facilities for a sick lion. He also suggested making them zoo more attractive for tourists by shaping old trees.

He further directed that management and cleanliness of the zoo should be ensured to prevent the dengue.
