KARACHI:

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Senator Ghulam Ali has said the country is passing through the most difficult time of its history as progress and prosperity is not on government’s agenda.

Speaking to businessmen at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) on Thursday, he said more taxes were being imposed on the business community which was already paying taxes while those who were earning millions of rupees in profits only paid a few thousand rupees in taxes.

He said the trading community should forge unity among them as only they could lead the nation. He said the government’s only policy was to patch up with any party which got annoyed by its measures and it did not have any national agenda.

Asia-Pacific Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Tariq Sayeed said Pakistan needed to improve relations with its neighbours, adding efforts were being made to attract foreign investment, particularly from China and India, and these efforts would benefit Pakistan. He said Pakistan could export its surplus production to India.

He said the trading and business community should get united and embark on a political action programme, according to which election candidates capable of strengthening the country’s economy should be supported as was done in the United States.

He said the brave business community, which was not only running industries in such difficult times but were also exporting its products, should use its strength. He emphasised that the business community should stop relying on US and look towards India, China and Iran.
