SHC awaits SC’s verdict to decide excessive schools fee case

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) adjourned on Monday the hearing of the plea pertaining to the excessive fee charged by private schools.

A three-member bench comprising Justice Aqeel Abbasi, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Faisal Kamal heard the case. The lawyers observed that the Supreme Court (SC) has reserved the verdict on the school fee case.

The court remarked that till the SC announces the verdict, they cannot decide anything.

The school's lawyer observed that some of the students have not paid the fee and have left after taking examinations. The court suggested taking legal action against them and adjourned the hearing till August 19.

Illegal toll tax

The SHC directed to stop collecting illegal toll tax on Hub road and other points.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Azizul Rehman heard the plea in which the plaintiff's lawyer observed that illegal toll tax is being charged at illegal toll tax booths and plazas established in the city.

The court ordered to stop illegal toll tax collection and directed the West deputy commissioner, police and National Highway Authority to take action against illegal toll tax booths.

The court also directed the authorities to present a pictorial report of demolishing the illegal booths.

Kidnap and murder

The SHC adjourned the hearing for review appeals by accused, Ahmed Umar Sheikh and others, in the case pertaining to the kidnap and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl due to the absence of the defence lawyer.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar and Justice Amjad Ali Setho heard the appeals against the verdict. On the absence of the lawyer for accused, Khwaja Naveed Ahmed, the court adjourned the hearing till June 25.

In a statement, the brother of the accused said that each time, a new date is given and asked that the case be allowed to progress. Justice Gorar told the peititioner to tell this to his lawyer or to the superintendent. We are present to hear the case, the lawyers must also be present, said the judge.

According to the police, Daniel Pearl was kidnapped from Karachi in 2002 and later murdered.

An anti-terrorism court sentenced Sheikh to death.The court sentenced the other accused, Fahad Naseem, Sheikh Adil and Salman Saqib, to life imprisonment.

Appeals rejected

While hearing an appeal against the punishment awarded in a case pertaining to possession of illegal weapons and extortion, the same bench rejected the appeals of accused, Abdul Jabbar and Muhammad Asif.

A trial court had awarded the punishment in 2018.

The accused had demanded Rs10 million from Hatim Khan Turk, a trader in Bahadurabad in 2016. A case against the accused is registered at Bahadurabad Police Station.
