KARACHI:

All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq rejected the Indian prime minister's peace talks offer on Tuesday, describing it as ambiguous and carrying nothing new.

Farooq said there can be no dialogue unless India  releases political prisoners and withdraws the hundreds of thousands of army soldiers from the region.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had offered to hold talks with any group opposed to terrorism and violence on Monday.

Demonstrations welcome Indian PM

Demonstrations were held in Sri Nagar as Indian premier Manmohan Singh held meetings with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other senior officials.

The entire city observed a shutter down strike since Monday, when Singh began his tour of the valley. Strict security measures were put into place for the visit.

Police laid spools of barbed wires across roads and important intersections, while many roads leading to senisitive areas were blocked. A curfew was also imposed in the city to prevent anti-India demonstrations.
