CHINIOT: Residents of Muslim Colony, a slum located near River Chenab in Chiniot, expressed frustration over the fact that they are not being provided basic amenities, despite repeated assurances from authorities concerned. Broken roads, choked drainage systems, unhygienic drinking water and an overall dearth of basic health facilities make up the current landscape of the area.

A visit to the vicinity by Express News revealed that the area has turned into a garbage dump due to the lack of cleanliness arrangements by the district administration. The sewerage system has been choked for the past several months and sewage can be seen accumulated in every street in the locality. Besides, a foul stench has gripped the entire area, making the lives of locals miserable.

The stagnant water is affecting the health of residents and many of them are suffering from ailments such as hepatitis, lung cancer, breathing problems and malaria.

In addition to this, diabetes and heart diseases are also very common among people living in the colony.

While speaking to Express News, the residents complained that the previous governments made commitments to develop the area, but failed to deliver on their promises.

They said Muslim Colony exists in isolation and is deprived of basic necessities crucial for survival. The irate residents said they lodged several complaints, but officials had turned a deaf ear to their problems.

They highlighted that the lack of medical facilities in the area has aggravated problems.

They mentioned that Muslim Colony was once a favourite tourist spot as it is situated near the bank of the River Chenab. Hundreds of tourists from far-flung areas visited the site, but negligence and lack of facilities has badly affected this activity in the area.

Residents urged Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to visit the area and witness its condition.
