Cats living swank in their own Silicon Valley apartment

'They don’t drink. They don’t smoke. They don’t play loud music,' says landlord

Two cats, Louise and Tina, are living in their own 425 square feet, $1,500-a-month apartment in San Jose, California, the Huffington Post reported.

Their landlord, David Callisch, says his tenants are ideal.

“They don’t drink. They don’t smoke. They don’t play loud music,” Callisch told Bay Area news channel ABC7.

The cats, named after characters in the television show “Bob’s Burgers,” live in an apartment with a bathroom, shower, an Apple TV and a cat tree.

“It’s quirky, isn’t it? I never planned for this to happen,” Callisch told KPIX 5, a CBS affiliate in the Bay Area. “People love their pets, they’re part of their family, so I wanted to help out my buddy.”

His friend is 43-year-old Troy Good whose 18-year-old daughter Victoria Amith recently left for college but couldn't take her cats with her into her dorm room and left them under her father's care.

But when Good moved in with his fiancée, who has a dog, the pets weren't getting along. So Good asked his friend Callisch if he could rent his space that Callisch was considering renting out on Airbnb.

People who heard about it were upset considering the significant income disparity in the Bay Area. In fact, a United Nations special rapporteur visited Oakland and San Francisco in October 2018 as part of a fact-finding mission on housing and called the treatment of homeless residents in the area "cruel and inhumane".

She called the homelessness crisis there a “violation of multiple human rights” in a report.

The cats' owner seems aware of how the living arrangement could be perceived.

“It’s not in a public space, it’s in someone’s backyard because there’s obviously a huge housing issue in the area,” she told KPIX 5. “And I don’t want people to be like, ‘Oh, this is taking away the housing.’”

“I love my cats so much,” she said. “I’m so attached to them. I’m like a cat lady.”
