RAWALPINDI:

In what they called the third and the final warning for businessmen to “mend their ways”, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)-South Punjab ‘asked’ them to shut down movie and CD shops or face the consequences.

On the first of this month, the president of Imperial Market in Raja Bazaar, just a few kilometres from General Headquarters (GHQ) received a threat letter apparently from the Southern Punjab chapter of the banned terrorist outfit.

The letter, written in Urdu on plain white paper, was addressed to the president of Imperial Market and claimed to be written by the leader of TTP-South Punjab. However, the name of the writer was not given.

“We have noticed that your market has become a den of immoral and un-Islamic activities. You sell pornographic movies and CDs containing immoral content. Therefore, we warn you to stop your immoral activities now or else you will be responsible for the grave consequences,” stated the letter, adding that this was the final warning.

The letter also urged traders to, “Help (TTP-Punjab) in eliminating immorality from society.”

Imperial Market President Sheikh Idrees told The Express Tribune that this was third letter they had received from the same terrorist outfit. “Last year, we also received a letter containing almost identical details,” he said.

Idrees said that more than a dozen shopkeepers had shut down their businesses following the threat last year. Many more are thinking of closing down after the recent threats.”Life is more important than businesses,” said Idrees. He said they had informed the city administration and police about the letter, who in turn have provided extra security in the area. “They had deputed men in plain clothes and arrangements for night-time security have also been made,” said the market president.

Mark | 12 years ago | Reply This article is quite old and probably neglected by now but, the message notification reminded me and I noticed something tragically funny this time around. Didn't TTP declare that they would not ever target innocents and only government/armed forces related targets? I'd like to see them explain this CD market threat and how it fit into their recent claims.
