A bevy of political heavyweights took to Twitter on Tuesday to greet the nation as Pakistan turned 71.

In a late-night post, prime minister-designate Imran Khan shared a nostalgic image of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal at the 1932 London Round Table Conference. His uncles Jahangir Khan and Zaman Khan were also present at the event.

"14 Aug 2018: On this Independence Day I am filled with the greatest optimism. Despite our grave economic crises, due to corruption & cronyism, I know if we are united in our resolve, we will rise to the challenge & Pak will become the great nation envisaged by our Quaid & Iqbal."

Nation marks Independence Day with traditional zeal, fervour



"Independence Day is a day of thanksgiving," Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif said.  "A day to remember how Muslims of sub-continent came together under the inspiring leadership of Quaid-i-Azam to carve out a homeland for themselves. Today I pay my rich tributes to those who sacrificed everything 2 achieve this country."



Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the people to come together for the celebrations. "I share the joy of every Pakistani today in celebrating our independence. It is still a long & difficult road ahead to prosperity, peace & equality but for right now let us come together to celebrate Pakistan."



 

Leader of the Opposition in Senate Sherry Rehman and senior PTI leader Asad Umar applauded the zeal and fervour in the federal capital on the eve of August 14.





The PTI's Shah Mehmood Qureshi paid tribute to sacrifices that led to the creation of Pakistan. "On this day, 71 years ago this great country of ours came into being due to the sacrifices made by our ancestors. Today the sun of Naya Pakistan has risen and so has this great nation.Together we will make Pakistan the country of Iqbal's & Quaid's dreams. Happy Independence Day!"



Naeemul Haque pondered if the nation was "really free".

"Are we really free? Free from ghurbat?Jihalat? Nafrat? Let us not forget today millions of our fellow Pakistanis who suffer from poverty. Who don’t have a home or a job or cannot afford 2 meals a day, or medicine for their sick ones or school fees/books. Phir bhi Azadi Mubarak."



The party's Shireen Mazari also reiterated the need to realise Jinnah and Iqbal's vision. "14 August - every year this day is a reminder of what our Quaid envisaged for our nation; where we are and how far we have to travel to achieve our Quaid Jinnah's & Allama Iqbal's vision. But today I see hope renewed under ldrship of IK - we will get there."



Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar visited Quaid's Mausoleum to pay homage.
