The Sindh Elections Appellate Tribunal on Saturday overruled the petition against acceptance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan's nomination papers, giving him the green signal to contest election from Karachi's NA-243.

As reported in this newspaper The Express Tribune on June 11, the ex-chief justice of Pakistan Chaudhry Iftikhar had decided to challenge Khan on Sita White issue. Later the appeal was filed by a candidate from Iftikhar's Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party (PJDP).

The appeal had pointed to Khan's alleged failure to disclose the sponsors of his foreign trips and information on who bears the expenditure of his children as well as his failure to mention his alleged daughter in the nomination papers.

While PTI chief will be able to contest the election on the Karachi seat: Gulshan-e-Iqbal and parts of Jamshed Quarters. His appeals against the rejection of nomination papers from NA-95 (Mianwali) and NA-53 (Islamabad) are still withheld with the Punjab and Islamabad election tribunals.

In addition to these constituencies, Khan is also in the run for NA-35 (Bannu) and NA-131 (Lahore).

The tribunal during the day also issued notices on appeals against the rejection of papers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Farooq Sattar and the acceptance of former Sindh chief minister Murad Ali Shah's nomination papers.

Later, the Lahore High Court tribunal under Justice Faisal Zaman issued notices to election commission and other respondents on an appeal filed by PTI chief against the rejection of his nomination papers by the RO for NA-95 Mianwali.

In his appeal he had contended that his nomination papers were rejected despite submitting affidavit in-time.

Another tribunal issuing notices to the respondents fixed June 25 for arguments in an appeal over RO's decision to accept Khan's nomination papers for NA-131.

The petitioner Jahangir Dogar contended that Imran is no more 'Sadiq and Ameen' who told a lie while submitting nomination papers. He has alleged that Imran mentioned his two children in nomination papers while he did not bother to mention his one daughter.

The same tribunal also cleared PTI's candidate Col (retd) Hashim Dogar from constituency PP-177. The petitioner Dogar had contended that returning officer (RO) had rejected his papers illegally raising objection over the matter of his retirement.

Moreover, the Punjab tribunal headed by Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh cleared Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz to contest elections from PP-173, rejecting Iqtidar Haider's appeal against the acceptance of her nomination papers.

A separate appeal, filed by PTI's Yameen Rashid, is still pending with the tribunal against the acceptance of three PML-N leaders Maryam for NA-125, former Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Pervez Malik from constituency NA-125.

The petitioner in Maryam's case has contended that her actual name is Maryam Safdar but instead she used Maryam Nawaz, which is tantamount to deceive the process of election, he said. In his application he also alleged she has prepared two CNICs.

The PML-N, however, announced yesterday that its board had decided that the former prime minister's daughter would contest the elections from NA-127 (Lahore) and PP-173.

Another appellate court fixed June 26 for arguments on an appeal filed by a voter Naveed Ali from constituency NA-128 challenging nomination papers of PML-N's Shaikh Rohail Asghar and Khurram Rohail Asghar.

In the case of PTI's Dr Murad Rass papers for PP-159 the appellate court fixed June 25. The petitioner has implored that Dr Rass has dual nationality and did not mention in his nomination papers so his papers be rejected.

One more PML-N leader Rana Hayat papers came into question for NA-140 it has been reserved by the appellate tribunal. The petitioner had contended that Hayat had not mentioned his assets in nomination papers but even then the RO accepted his papers.

A tribunal fixed June 26 for arguments in an appeal filed by a voter Muhammad Irfan challenging RO's decision to accept nomination papers of PTI's Ijaz Chaudhary.

The petitioner M Irfan contended Ijaz had not mentioned his complete assets and even hid 'Kisan Company' in nomination papers, he alleged. Ijaz also did not mention his six vehicles he owned, he added.
