Located in Dera Ghazi Khan, the Taunsa Barrage spans over 16,000 acres. Despite being the second largest wildlife habitat of Punjab, the hunting in the area continues due to shortage of staff. With two only guards deployed to protect the habitat, a 2013 survey estimated a population of hog deer at 500.
Animals such as rabbits, ducks and hens, mostly found at the head of Taunsa Barrage, are seldom sighted in the area any more.
According to sources in the wildlife department, a Rs650 million project was initiated in 2015 outlining construction of buildings and check posts. The project, however, ended in 2016.
Hunting ban: Population of Chinkara deer on the rise in Cholistan
Sources told Express News that only two employees were stationed to prevent hunting and rescue Indus dolphins. Out of the two, one is a senior citizen. The source further revealed that a dead dolphin was recently recovered. “The hunters hunt openly due to shortage of staff. Those who are reported, get away after exerting political pressure.”
When asked about the lack of employees, DG Wildlife Khalid Ayaz told Express News that he had sought details from the concerned director. He denied reports of illegal hunting of hog deer in the area. “Strict action will be taken against hunters regardless of how influential they are.”
