Complaint lodged in NAB against Rao Anwar

Complaint alleges acquisition of assets beyond means by former SSP

KARACHI: Naqeebullah’s father, Muhammad Khan, moved on Monday an application, requesting NAB to look into allegations of money-laundering and acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income of former SSP Malir Rao Anwar

Naqeebullah Mehsud was executed in an extra-judicial killing a few months ago.

Rao Anwar also appeared in the anti-terrorism court.

Muhammad Khan handed over the application directly to the additional director of NAB’s complaint cell, Shahzada Imtiaz, after consulting with the bureau’s director-general in the court.

The application stated that Anwar was involved in acquiring assets beyond his means and was involved in money laundering.

His travel record, the application stated, showed that he visited Dubai at least 74 times since 2012 during his tenure as the SSP Malir.

Khan wondered how a person, who was drawing a salary of just Rs113,772 could afford so many trips abroad.

The application also accused the suspended SSP of being involved in extorting protection money and running several illegal rackets, including land grabbing, supplying sand and gravel to construction businesses, smuggling of Iranian petrol, vice dens, narcotics and running illegal water hydrants.



These allegations, he stated, required serious investigation.

Meanwhile, he told media persons at Karachi Press Club (KPC): “I won’t betray the nation and betraying, in this case, is like betraying one’s mother.”

“When Naqeebullah’s children see [Anwar] on TV when he appeared in the court, they ask me if he is their father’s killer.”

He was accompanied by grand jirga members.

He insisted that he would make no deal with the killer of his son.

Khan said: “I was promised by the prime minister, chief justice of the Supreme Court and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) that justice will be served, but after seeing how Rao Anwar is being treated, I have doubts.”

Rights activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir said that SSP Anwar should be treated just like other 11 other accused in the Naqeebullah murder case.

He said that if jail was not safe for him (Rao Anwar), he should be kept in Rangers’ detention centres, where high-profile terrorists were kept.

Nasir contended that Anwar’s life had become more comfortable after he appeared in court.

“Where in the world a murderer appears before a court with such protocol and his house is declared a sub-jail?” he said.

According to Nasir, Anwar’s house was declared a sub-jail not on the recommendations of the IG Prisons, but on Rao’s personal request to the home minister.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for the grand Jirga Saifur Rehman said that the grand jirga would again convene after Eid if Rao Anwar not jailed for his crimes.

“If our demands are not met, we will start a protest campaign,” he said.

He asserted that criminals like Rao Anwar were fit to serve their entire jail term in isolation or confined to Guantanamo Bay.
