QUETTA: The Provincial Mining and Mineral Development Department has formed a four-member committee to investigate Marwar and Surr Range coal mine tragedies in which 23 coal miners were killed last week.

The committee is led by Director General Mining Development Muhammad Imran Zarkoon and comprises Chief Mine Inspector Iftikhar Ahmed, Project Director Geo-Data Quetta Jamil Kehtran and Director Mining Exploration Abdullah Shahwani.

The committee will visit the site of the incidents and conduct investigation. It is also tasked to fix responsibility over negligence towards safety of workers.

At least 23 colliers were killed after two mines in Marwar and Surr Range caved in due to methane gas explosion. The incidents sparked anger among the coal miners community while the Chief Justice of Pakistan also took sou motu notice of the incidents.
