ISLAMABAD: A large number of government officers and officials have obtained passports in private capacity without mentioning their government service. According to sources, as many as 47,561 officers and officials have attained passports without declaring their government service.

A source told Express News that in view of the sensitive nature of the matter, the Immigration and Passports director general has sent a letter to the Ministry of Interior to bring the matter into its notice.

During the exercise to find out government officers/officials who did not declare their dual nationality, it came to the notice that 47,561 officers/officials obtained passports in private capacity, the letter said.

“Obtaining a passport in private capacity being a government servant is punishable offence under section 6 of Passport Act 1974,” it added. A source said the passports of defaulting officers/officials can be cancelled and legal action under passport act 1974 can be initiated against them.

“The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is the competent forum where cases can be lodged against the defaulting officers and officials to get them punished,” he added.
