Five killed, 10 injured in truck-coach collision in Karachi

Victims were on their way to Larkana from Karachi

KARACHI: At least five people were killed and 10 others, including women and children, injured during a road mishap in the outskirts of the city.

The casualties took place after a passenger coach collided with a truck near the Northern Bypass within the limits of the Manghopir police station late on Monday night. Ambulances of different welfare associations reached the site following the accident and shifted the bodies and injured to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and treatment respectively.

According to the police, the accident took place between the Larkana-bound passenger coach Geo Pak and the Mazda truck. Both the vehicles were in speed when they collided, the police officials said. Manghopir SHO Haji Sanaullah said the victims were residents of Larkana who were on their way to Larkana from Karachi while the truck was on its way to Hub.

A contingent of law enforcers also reached the site and participated in the rescue work. SHO Sanaullah said out of the five deceased, three died on the spot while the other two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. According to the police, the coach driver was among the deceased while the truck driver, allegedly responsible for the accident, managed to escape the scene.

The case of the incident had been registered while the police were looking for the truck driver and cleaner, SHO Sanaullah said. The officer added that the actual circumstances of the accident had yet to be ascertained but according to initial investigations, it was a head-on collision.

The deceased persons include coach driver Ameer Shah, Azeem Aziz and Haq Nawaz while two victims have yet to be identified. Some of the injured have been identified as Amna Bibi, Peera, Rizwana, Nazia and Shah Nawaz.
