ISLAMABAD: In a major reshuffle, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) transferred and posted on Wednesday 86 officers, dozens of them as district and regional election commissioners, across country.

This restructuring comes at a time when ECP has to start the process of re-marking boundaries of constituencies as soon as parliament passes an amendment, allowing the election authorities to conduct delimitations on the basis of provisional results of the census.

Most of the re-shuffled officials were grade-17 and -18 officers.

Some were promoted from grade 17 to 18 to new assignments. Three of them were promoted to grade 19. Of the three, two were deployed as regional election commissioners and one was promoted as director of the provincial election commission’s office in Lahore.

ECP faces internal strife over reshuffle

In addition to district election commissioners in dozens of districts, regional election commissioners of Sukkur, Multan, Bannu, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Mardan and Quetta have been changed.

Nine of the reshuffled officers were working in the ECP secretariat in Islamabad, 26 were affiliated with the Punjab, 23 in Balochistan, 14 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and 13 in Sindh.

Many officers, who were arbitrarily transferred in a similar move last year, were transferred back to their native areas.

The new DECs and RECs would have to undertake delimitations in areas most of them were unfamiliar with.
