LAHORE: Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Director General Noorul Amin Mengal has warned that the authority will deal with iron hands salt processors who will not comply to provincial food standards and ensure food fortification in salt by February 15, 2018. Mengal said that PFA teams will visit salt factories within 90 days and issue notices for their reforms as per food standards set by the authority. “We have given business adjustment time to all salt processors for fortification of salt. The PFA is not an enemy of food business but a friend trying to bring business people on the right track by following food rules and regulations,” he maintained. Mengal said that PFA has given three months ultimatum to salt processors for maintaining quality by using approved ingredients, mineral and iodine in manufacturing. He said that 60% of the Punjab population was lacking different nutritional ingredients and this deficiency can easily be fulfilled by fortifying iodine, minerals and other ingredients in salt. Salt was the main ingredient, used in the preparation of daily food, he added.
