LAHORE: The number of out-of-school children is alarming in Pakistan. Some 22.6 million children have no access to schooling as government policies were not addressing the core issue seriously jeopardising the future of the youth.

These views were expressed by the speakers during a two-day international conference on inclusive education held by the Department of Special Needs Education at University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore on Tuesday.

The speakers said there was a dire need to impose an education emergency in the country. As many as 47% children, between the ages of five and 15, were living a life out of formal education. They called for immediate attention to the matter on a state level.

The speakers emphasised on creating effective policies and implementing them with the concept of inclusive education, which according to them has become a popular theme for the improvement of schools across the globe.

Education departments were planning to introduce inclusive education at primary and secondary levels and HEC was also actively working on an inclusive education policy, but the official patronage is needed at all levels.
