KARACHI: A police official was martyred during an exchange of fire with criminals in the Saudabad neighbourhood on Friday, while the Sindh police's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) claimed to have arrested a unit incharge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement - London (MQM-London) during a raid conducted in Korangi.

A police constable, 50-year-old Bilal Hussain, embraced martyrdom in the Saudabad area. The incident occurred when the police conducted a raid in Sahib Dad Goth in Saudabad. Sharing details of the incident, SHO Rao Rafiq said the police raided a narcotics den run by a drug peddler, Shahzad, and arrested drug dealers at the den. However, later, their accomplices attacked the police in a bid to free their companions from the police custody, which resulted in Hussain's death.

According to the SHO, the attackers managed to escape under the cover of fire and the police were searching for them. The deceased police official hailed from Faisalabad and had been living in Karachi in the locality of Quaidabad. A case has been registered, while further investigations are under way.

In another incident, the unit incharge of MQM-London for the Mehran Town area of Korangi was arrested by the CTD during a raid conducted on a tip off in Mehran Town. The suspect was identified as Waseem Ahmed alias Waseem Double.

According to CTD Incharge Raja Umer Khattab, the police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition on the information provided by the accused. The CTD incharge said the accused was a ghost employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board who used to get salary without performing his duty. The officer added that the suspect had purchased weapons with fake licences in the names of his fellow party workers at the unit but later dumped them in fear of getting caught due to the ongoing police and Rangers operation in the city.

The MQM-London unit incharge was also involved in various other cases of crime including China cutting, extortion and forced collection of hides of sacrificial animals from 2010 to 2013, said the CTD incharge.
