Awareness stressed to tackle natural disasters

Rescue 1122 officials conduct mock exercise on handling calamities

MULTAN/ FAISALABAD: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Rescue 1122 marked the National Disaster Awareness Day in Faisalabad and Multan.

In this connection, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) and Rescue 1122 organised an awareness seminar which was held at the Iqbal Auditorium. The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Salman Ghani.

UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar was the guest of honour. The commemoration of the day started with observation of silence for one minute, while prayers were also offered for the martyrs.

On the occasion, the Rescue 1122 conducted a mock exercise in which rescue activities were held to treat patients and to tackle the calamity situation. Besides, an awareness walk was also taken out from Iqbal Auditorium to Admin Block in which a large number of rescuers, volunteers, representatives of NGOs, students and citizens belonging to different walks of life participated.

On the occasion, DC Salman Ghani said there was a need to create awareness among people about measures in case of any disaster.

VC Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar said, “Disaster awareness helped the government and communities to take necessary measures in order to minimise the losses of lives.”

Similarly, in Multan, various seminars were held to honour the victims who lost their lives in different natural disasters.

A walk was also held which was participated by the officials of district administration, people from different walks of life and Rescue 1122 officials.

Pakistan among riskiest countries for businesses

Earlier while speaking at a programme, PDMA Director General Waheed Malik said that PDMA was taking different steps to raise awareness among public regarding dealing with natural calamities and disasters. It was also imparting training to the public in this regard.

He said that they were celebrating National Disaster Day this year with the theme ‘Tayar Pakistan’. It had also initiated ‘Early Warning and Response System’ to mitigate effects of disasters. Through this system, they have integrated weather forecast department, agriculture and Rescue 1122 with 20 districts of the province that had more chances of natural disasters, he said. It also introduced a Multi Hazard Vulnerable Risk Assessment in these districts, he added.

Malik said that it had also initiated Community Emergency Response Training Programme and systems to monitor water-flows in the rivers to deal with floods. It was also introducing mobile communication service to deal with such situation in far-flung areas.
