ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has decided in principle to open a regional office in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B).

To finalise consultations on the move, a delegation of the PMDC will embark on a visit to the region today.

Officials at the PMDC said that during the visit, PMDC officials will meet with officials of the G-B government and the health department.

Further, PMDC Chief Professor Dr Shabbir Ahmed Lehri will visit Gilgit and Skardu to see what kind of land or buildings are available within which to open the regional office. Initially, however, sources said that it is expected that the PMDC will rent premises for the regional office.

Moreover, it would be staffed with assistants and a registrar. Advertisements to hire staff at the office would be issued soon.

The establishment of the regional office would help solve several problems for Gilgit-Baltistan’s doctors who would now not have to journey to Islamabad.
