1,000 beggars arrested from four cities

As part of a crackdown, police rounded up 1,000 beggars from Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran and Multan on Thursday. Multan RPO Sultan Azam Taimoori said cases were registered against 422 beggars, while 566 were sent to the jail.

He said 606 children under the age of 15 and some women had also been rounded up and handed over to the Child Protection Bureau.

He said the motive behind launching the crackdown was to discourage professional beggars. He directed the officials to step up operation against professional beggars.

Islamabad Police form special squad to tackle beggars

Meanwhile, recently in Faisalabad teams of Social Welfare Department (SWD) rounded up 30 beggars from different markets of the city during anti-beggary campaign in Faisalabad on Thursday.

A spokesperson of the SWD said the arrested beggars included 16 males, 12 females and two children whereas cases have also been registered against seven habitual beggars.

He added the drive would continue during Ramazan to eradicate the evil practice. He maintained the district administration will take strict action against those using beggary as a profession.
