KARACHI: Pakistan Apparel Forum Chairman Jawed Bilwani has said that the allocation of only Rs4 billion for the textile industry out of prime minister’s Rs180-billion export package reflects lack of seriousness on the part of the government towards the sector.

Bilwani, who is also chief coordinator of the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said as per annual export estimates and careful observation of the announced allocation, it should be close to Rs35 billion.

Millers believe the textile sector, which contributes 8% to Pakistan’s gross domestic product, has remained a low priority area for the government, which has not given it due importance.
