KARACHI: At least six people were injured in a hand grenade attack in the restive Lyari neighbourhood on Saturday.

The hand grenade attack occurred at Usman Brohi Road in Chakiwara. Police and witnesses said that at least two unidentified men riding a motorcycle lobbed a hand grenade, injuring six people.

The injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for treatment. They were identified as Shahnawaz, Nawaz, Aslam, Afzal, Wadood and Uzair. The armed motorcyclists, however, managed to escape after committing the crime.

Following the incident, Sindh IG Allah Dino Khawaja took notice of the attack and asked the police officials concerned to submit a report to him. He inquired about the incident and directed the relevant officials to arrest the culprits.

Lyari has remained tense despite the arrest of the Lyari’s kingpin, Uzair Baloch, as well as the arrest of the chief operational commander of the Lyari gangsters, Baba Ladla, who was recently killed during an alleged encounter with the Rangers in Lyari along with two of his companions. Police officials said that the gangsters based in Lyari were behind the grenade attack, adding that the motive could be to create harassment. Further investigation is underway.
