KARACHI: The management of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) is chalking out short and long-term plans for a smooth supply of raw material, the mill’s chief executive said.

Speaking to PSM workers on Friday, Acting Chief Executive Wasif Mehmood said that the workers deserve appreciation for their dedication to the mill – one of the country’s strategic assets.

On his visit to the coke oven battery plant, senior officials involved in the process of production, balancing, modernisation and replacement briefed Mehmood about the operational procedure of the plant. They informed that the battery is being operated at suitable temperatures, ranging from 1,150 degree centigrade to 1,380 degree centigrade for the 49.5-hour coking period, after adopting all necessary safety measures under the guidance of Ukrainian experts.

A contract for reconstruction of two coke oven batteries was signed with a Ukrainian company in January 2007 at a cost of $23 million, while another coke oven battery has been working since October 2008 without any adverse effects.
