HONG KONG: The son of a Chinese billionaire bought eight Apple iPhone 7s for his Alaskan malamute Coco on the day of the phone’s release.

Pictures of Coco with the mobile phones have been posted on the dog's verified Weibo social media account -- China's equivalent of Twitter. “I don't understand all the show-off posts on (social media)," read one post alongside the photos.

"What's the point? Don't make me do it?" said another. In China, an iPhone 6 costs 6,988 yuan ($1,047), while the larger iPhone 7 Plus goes for 7,988 yuan ($1,197).

Wang Sicong's father Wang Jianlin is reportedly worth $30 billion. Sicong has been nicknamed “the nation’s husband” in keeping with his status as China’s most eligible bachelor. This is not the first time he has doted on Coco in such fashion. In 2015, he attracted widespread outrage after posting photos of the dog wearing two Apple Watches with luxury bands worth upwards of $37,000.

Most of his online posts are infamous as outrageous displays of wealth, for which he has come under fire from Chinese state media. Last year, Wang courted controversy when he said that the only characteristic he looked for in potential girlfriends was the size of their breasts.  He received widespread criticism over this statement.

The official Xinhua news agency published a blistering commentary about Wang accusing him of having "stained the purity of the Chinese (people)" and warning others not to copy the "arrogant and coarse celebrity" with “Berlusconi-style arrogance.” This forced Wang’s father to appear to on state television in connection with the controversy. He blamed his son's behavior on "western schooling."

Aleem | 7 years ago | Reply Wrong headline, should be 7. iPhone 7s still not released yet.
