LAHORE: Naulakha police have arrested an official of the Dolphin Squad on an attempt-to-murder charge after he shot at a suspected drug pusher, missed and the bullet hit a seven-year-old on Sunday.

A Naulakha police spokesperson said a Dolphin Squad team was out on routine patrol in Naulakha when they came across two men on a motorcycle near Pathi Ground. They told them to stop and identify themselves, but the men sped off. The Dolphin Squad team chased them and one of them shot at the fleeing suspects. The bullet missed the target and hit a girl who was passing by. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. Doctors there later said she would survive.

The team managed to apprehend one of the suspects. His accomplice had managed to flee. The girl’s father Muhammad Rizwan filed a complaint against Shahid, the Dolphin Squad official who had fired the shot. Police have registered a case under Section 324 (attempt to murder) and arrested Shahid.

City SP Muhammad Naveed said that they were investigating the matter. “We will take action against the Dolphin Squad official according to law,” he said. Inspector General of Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera took notice of the incident and ordered Operations DIG Haider Ashraf to submit a report in this regard.
