Whoever thought Britney Spears’ seemingly tumultuous personal life would be the end of her sensational music career clearly had it all wrong. The millennial icon is hitting up pop culture one more time by releasing a brand new album, singing retro karaoke hits and taking to the stage once again for the first time since 2007, reported Reuters.

The now 34-year-old became a teen pop phenomenon back in 1998, with Baby, One More Time. From there on, Spears has delivered hit after hit, from 2000’s Oops! ... I Did it Again to Toxic and 3 in 2003 and 2011, respectively. She is also the latest superstar to ride, sing and chat with US talk show host James Corden, for his viral Carpool Karaoke segment, which saw both don schoolgirl uniforms like Spears wore in the video for Baby, One More Time. The singer also released her latest album Glory on Friday, ahead of her much anticipated return to the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA).

But despite dominating the music industry, Spears underwent a personal and career meltdown between 2006 and 2007, which saw her shave off her signature blonde hair, lose custody of her two children and be placed under a court-ordered conservatorship. She finally made a comeback in late 2008 and for the past three years, has been performing a nightly show in Las Vegas.

But with Glory and all the anticipation surrounding her VMAs performance, Spears has come back into the global spotlight. According to American music journalist and author Rob Sheffield, Glory is “another fantastic comeback” for Spears, in which she “goes back to the fizzy, electro-stomp mode she does best.” In fact, the album has been on top of the iTunes charts in more than 40 countries including Saudi Arabia, Chile and Russia, since coming out on Friday.

Billboard’s Jennifer Keishin Armstrong said that with Make Me — Spears’ first single and music video from Glory — the star has “reclaimed her standout talent: a distinctive dance style that combines cheerleader precision with slinky bits of burlesque.” Spears performed Make Me with rapper G-Eazy live at the VMAs, a return after her halting performance of Gimme More in 2007, when her career hit an all-time low.

“She has had such a huge impact on this award show in particular, throughout her career.  So for us to have Spears back is a no-brainer,” said executive producer of VMAs, Garrett English. “She embodies what the VMAs are, to a large extent and has had some of the biggest moments on this stage,” he added.

Spears is also to be the subject of a 2017 TV biopic for Lifetime cable channel. The film will chart her rise to fame, along with her stumbles. It will also depict more personal aspects of her life, such as romances with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake and her former husbands, Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline.
