Smuggled goods worth Rs15m seized

Two suspects were carrying seven packages of contraband items in their luggage

KARACHI: Pakistan Customs seized goods worth Rs15 million from Jinnah International Airport Karachi on Wednesday.

This was shared in a press conference by Customs deputy collector Amjad Aman Laghari and additional collector Asad Raza Rizvi at the conference hall of Air Freight Unit on Thursday.

Laghari said that they had credible information that foreign-origin contrabands and illegal commercial goods of various types were being smuggled into the country as part of the luggage of some passengers travelling in Emirates flight number EK 610, which landed at 2am on Wednesday morning.



The team spotted two passengers, identified as Aslam Mengrani and Muhammad Jawaid, scanned their luggage and found seven packages of restricted commercial goods, informed Laghari.

After the examination of the packages, many mobile phones, medicines, memory cards, USBs, tablets, laptops including MacBooks, cameras were seized. The value of the goods was calculated to be more than Rs5.5 million while the duty/taxes on the goods were around Rs3 million, he added.

Rizvi informed that both the passengers have been arrested under sections of the Custom Act 1969. The Customs court has also granted remand of both the suspects, he claimed.
