LAHORE: In a bid to show support to Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Zafar Mahmood’s stance on Kalabagh dam, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said that this project should be completed with determination to avoid famine, control floods and generate cheap electricity.

LCCI President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad and Senior Vice President Almas Hyder said that it is a good omen that the head of one of the most important departments is advocating Kalabagh dam at all forums.

Speaking out: ‘Expedite construction of Bhasha Dam instead of Kalabagh’

The LCCI office-bearers said that the government should not listen to those elements that protest against projects beneficial for the country. “Kalabagh Dam is the most viable solution for the country’s power shortage, but a particular lobby is opposing this mega project under a well-planned conspiracy,” said the LCCI leaders. “These elements have not said anything about Bhasha dam as they know construction of Bhasha dam is a very hard task.

So, what do we do now? Keep fighting and dividing our nation and ultimately invite irreparable damage to this unfortunate country's vital power, water and economic survival needs? If Kalabagh Dam cannot be built now, due to petty politics and dictates of some politicians from their foreign masters, and it cannot without creating serious unity/integrity issues threatening the federation (as claimed by rival politicians themselves), then why not resolve to immediately start building Bhasha and a dozen or two other uncontroversial dams, without wasting any more time and without condemning, irresponsibly, our future generations to famine and desertification? Have mercy on this hapless/tormented nation and let the issue now be taken away from the parochial/petty minded politicians, perhaps through Supreme Court's suo-motto action, in vital national interest, and have the issue decided by an impartial/diversified team of internationally recognised experts in the field. Neither inconclusive/biased debates motivated by dirty politics nor consequential inaction or further delay, should be acceptable now !
