Lashkar-e-Taiba denies killing sisters in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) denied Wednesday killing two teenaged sisters in Indian Kashmir in an attack that generated widespread outrage.

The two women, aged 17 and 19, were killed in Sopore town, 55 kilometres north of the region's main city Srinagar, on Monday night when they were dragged from their house and shot dead.

"The police claim about the involvement of our activists in the killing of the sisters is baseless," an LeT spokesman told reporters in Srinagar by telephone.

LeT is blamed by India for the attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 that left 166 people dead and hundreds injured.

New Delhi has consistently called on Islamabad to crack down on the LeT.

Other rebel groups in Kashmir and the chief minister of the region, Omar Abdullah, have been among those to condemn the murders.

Suspected Muslim rebels also carried out a grenade attack on the residence of a veteran pro-Indian politician in Sopore on Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported.

Ashutosh | 13 years ago | Reply @ Maria How about holding a referendum in Baluchistan or Waziristan or even Sindh? Will you agree? Such suggestions are ridiculous... and only and enemy country can wish to other. Therefore, if you see carefully no one in this world specially those which respect democracy will ever make such demand or even suggestion. Jammu & Kashmir is integral part of India and the integrity can not be compromised with. . @ Maria and Faris These power are enacted only in special situation. Pakistan propagate terrorism and has over 40 terror camp in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. These well trained terrorists then not only aim the security forces and the law enforcement agencies but in collusion with separatist leaders the kill ordinary Kashmiris and through their local contacts and spread misinformation. The figures of death includes men and women from the security forces, police, politicians, Kashmiri Pandiths, Pakistani terrorists besides ordinary Kashmiris. Also, if you claim that crimes like rape by security forces and police is excessive then you people are not being honest. Also cases in which security forces are involved are severally dealt with. Please remember, elections are held in Jammu & Kashmir on regular intervals under full international observers and international media glare. Also there had been more participation by the citizens in the elections than the average in India or elsewhere.
Faris | 13 years ago | Reply LET if need local support , they would never employee such techniques because they are counter productive and locals would tip off the authorities against them. Now, Indian Army has the immense Powers to detain for as long as they want and commit other atrocities without being questioned. That explains as to why 90,000 Kasmiris are killed and disappeared since 1980's. It is this abuse of power that brings such incidents on daily basis which these Two Indians are defending by lying openly in this public forum. They will never accept the truth and will keep lying. But reality is that Kashmiris do not want to live with India and want freedom from Indian rule.
