KARACHI: Orangi division police claimed on Tuesday to have arrested five suspects and seized a huge cache of weapons and ammunition from them.

The arrests were disclosed during a press conference by Orangi SP Ali Asif. The suspects, later identified as Shamsher Khan Afridi, Sher Dan Afridi, Saddam Hussain Afridi, Wali Khan and Imran alias Lal Pathan, were taken into custody by the Frontier Colony police.

Speaking at the press conference, SP Asif said that the accused were arrested from near Hazara Chowk in Frontier Colony. "These men [suspects] were travelling in a rickshaw," said SP Asif, adding the police intercepted the rickshaw during snap-checking.

The police had received information about the smuggling of arms through a rickshaw, the police official revealed.

During the search, the police found a bag containing arms and ammunition, SP Asif said, adding that the police arrested all the suspects.

The weapons that were seized from the suspects included three pistols, a repeater and more than 2,328 rounds of various calibres.

The officer said that the police are questioning the suspects and the investigations are at a preliminary stage.

However, he added that the suspects have confessed to have been involved in various criminal activities, including murders, attempts to murder, kidnappings for ransom, land grabbing, drug peddling and smuggling of arms and ammunition for terror activities in the city. Cases have been registered against them while further investigation is under way.
