Recruitment Rules: Former Pepco MD remanded
Cheema’s counsel told the court that his client had nothing to do with the case and had been wrongly implicated
LAHORE:
An accountability court on Friday handed over Tahir Basharat Cheema, former managing director of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco), to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on a 14-day physical remand over alleged abuse of authority. The investigation officer told Judge Abdul Sattar that during his tenure as Pepco MD, Cheema disregarded recruitment rules and had made several illegal appointments. He requested the court to grant physical remand of the accused for further investigation. Cheema’s counsel told the court that his client had nothing to do with the case and had been wrongly implicated. He said his client should be released and the charges against him dismissed. After hearing the arguments, the court handed over Cheema to the NAB for 14 days and ordered to produce him again on the expiry of the remand period. NAB officials had arrested Cheema on Thursday.
