KARACHI: World Meningitis Day, marked on April 24, emphasises the importance of vaccinations, as a person diagnosed with meningitis can die within 24 hours. Meningitis is a rare infection that effects the delicate membranes called meninges that cover the brain and spinal cord. Every year more than 1.2 million people are affected by and 135,000 people die due to this disease. The signs and symptoms of meningitis are similar to those of the common flu; fever, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light and drowsiness. There is no vaccine available to cure the disease in Pakistan but there are some safe and effective vaccines to protect citizens from it.
