On April 1, news broke that Drew Barrymore and her husband, Will Kopelman, were getting divorced after nearly four years of marriage, reported Reuters. And while the news stunned many, reports suggest their split had been years in the making.

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,” the couple said in a joint statement. “Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on...Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as our first priority.”

Drew and Will – who are parents to daughters Olive and Frankie — had been living separate lives for more than a year until Drew finally decided to call it quits. “Both of them had created this image that they were one big happy family, but it was all a pretense,” a family insider said, reported Daily Mail.  According to the insider, Drew began contacting her attorneys in fall 2015. She tried holding the marriage together for as long as she could, but her relationship with Will was broken beyond repair.

The actor was previously married to bar owner Jeremy Thomas in March 1994 and filed for divorce less than two months later. She was then married to comedian Tom Green in July 2001, with the latter filing for divorce less than six months later.
