KARACHI:

Amid speculations that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was holding backdoor talks with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and was planning to join the Sindh government yet again, party leader and mayor-nominee Wasim Akhtar said that there was no discussion going on between the two parties.

After his hearing at the Sindh High Court on Saturday afternoon, Akhtar spoke to the media. "There is no need for us to hold deals or secret talks with the Sindh government," he said. "The recent meeting with the PPP was regarding the [All Parties' Conference] APC on census."

Rumour has it that the MQM has recently handed over a list to PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari regarding their grievances and demanded ministries in the Sindh government. On Thursday, a PPP delegation, including leaders Najmi Alam and Waqar Mehdi, came to Nine Zero and invited the party to Sunday's APC, which the MQM has accepted.

Akhtar said it is the responsibility of the Sindh government to transfer authority and powers to the local government after the elections. The party leader said that he was ready to face all kinds of 'fake cases' against him in the court. "I have always hoped and expected justice from the courts and I respect the courts even today," he said. "I will see now how many more FIRs will be registered against me."
